Description

This introductory-level course provides participants with a foundational understanding of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an evidence-based treatment. Participants will gain knowledge of DBT’s core theoretical underpinnings and its five modes of treatment, learning how these components integrate to form a comprehensive therapeutic approach. A central focus will be on the dialectical balance of acceptance and change strategies, crucial for effective DBT practice.

The course will delineate the six levels of validation and explore the purpose of DBT skills training, including core mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Through didactic instruction and practical exercises, participants will improve their competence in leading mindfulness practices and acquire the ability to teach and coach the use of these essential DBT skills. Emphasis will also be placed on utilizing DBT skills for navigating crisis situations and understanding the skills coaching process.

Furthermore, this training will cover the practical application of DBT, including strategies for adapting the model while maintaining fidelity to evidence-based practice. Participants will learn how to structure a DBT skills group based on a treatment hierarchy and enhance their ability to respond effectively to treatment-interfering behaviors within a group setting. The course will conclude by outlining three key steps in learning a new skill, empowering participants to facilitate skill acquisition in their clients.
